NOISE

Sound from the site will not impact residents due to the location of the data center.

The changes in distance and elevation between the site and the nearest home create natural buffers that limit sound travel.

Any equipment capable of producing noise will be sound treated to meet Boulder City’s noise limits. Servers and cooling fans create most of the sound at a data center, which is lessened the farther the distance from the building. Sound levels drop with distance, from about 70 dBA near the building to around 29 dBA at the nearest home.

If the emergency generators were running, the sound level at approximately 3 miles would be about 41 dBA, which is similar to the hum of a refrigerator. These levels are far below what people typically notice outdoors.

Additional measures, including acoustically treated generator enclosures and placing equipment in locations that limit sound travel, will further reduce noise. The project will follow all local noise rules and will monitor sound continuously during operations with the goal that Boulder City residents will not hear the facility during normal operations or during rare backup events.
